The Stalin Soviet Party leadership was composed of 'Apparatchiks'. These were professional functionaries of the Soviet government who held a position of bureaucratic and political responsibility. The apparatchik has been described as "a man not of grand plans, but of a hundred carefully executed details." The term is considered derogatory, with negative connotations in terms of the quality, competence, and attitude of a person thus described. Nikita Khrushchev was Stalin's Apparatchik clown in Residence, acting as a species of court jester. That's how he survived the purges and eventually gained the reigns of power. But he was driven by an ideology that was unworkable. He orchestrated a self serving elitist club of gerontocracy - the State was governed by an old boys club of elderly men thereafter. They were relentlessly driven by unworkable and repeatedly failed socialist ideology and 5 years plan policies producing only stagnation and decline. It was the same old story with each successive Premier one after the other...Leonid Breshnev, Alexei Kosygan, Yuri Andropov, Michael Suslov, Nicholasi Tikhonov, Nicholai Federanko, Andrei Gromyko, Konstantine Chrenko. The Soviet Union was disintegrating in the hands of these gerontocrats. The final death blow came with Russian capitulation to Afghan Islamists which spelled the collapse of the Warsaw Pact.
Gorbachev's perestroika reforms came too little too late. He adopted glasnost as a political slogan, denoting an increased openness and transparency in government institutions and activities in the USSR. It was taken to mean allowing Soviet citizens the possibility to discuss publicly the problems of their system and potential solutions. Gorbachev encouraged popular scrutiny and criticism of leaders, as well as a certain degree of exposure by the mass media. But the party and the Soviet Union could not be saved. The Confederation of Independent States which replaced the soviet union was too weak of a union.The Confederation of Independent States saw a fragmentation of the Soviet Republics, with the Ukraine and Lithuania becoming hostile to Russia.
From all this we can see parallels to how the modern Democratic party operates in terms of polarity, scope and orientation. The Democrats too are ruled by a self serving elitist club of gerontocracy with the likes of octogenarians Biden, Peslosi, Feinstein, Maxine Waters and Bernie Sanders at the helm. The intellectual force behind Biden's reform program pursues failed ideologically driven policies. Similar to the failed Soviet 5 year plans, the much flaunted Green New Deal is also doomed to the historical dustbin of grandiose ideas. In little exaggeration it has been described by detractors as 'what Stalin dreamed about, but never achieved'. The plan could cost between $51–$93 trillion over the next decade. According to The Washington Post (February 11, 2019), the resolution called for a "10-year national mobilization" whose primary goals would be:
- "Guaranteeing a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States."
- "Providing all people of the United States with – (i) high-quality health care; (ii) affordable, safe, and adequate housing; (iii) economic security; and (iv) access to clean water, clean air, healthy and affordable food, and nature."
- "Providing resources, training, and high-quality education, including higher education, to all people of the United States."
- "Meeting 100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources."
- "Repairing and upgrading the infrastructure in the United States, including . . . by eliminating pollution and greenhouse gas emissions as much as technologically feasible."
- "Building or upgrading to energy-efficient, distributed, and ‘smart’ power grids, and working to ensure affordable access to electricity."
- "Upgrading all existing buildings in the United States and building new buildings to achieve maximal energy efficiency, water efficiency, safety, affordability, comfort, and durability, including through electrification."
- "Overhauling transportation systems in the United States to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector as much as is technologically feasible, including through investment in – (i) zero-emission vehicle infrastructure and manufacturing; (ii) clean, affordable, and accessible public transportation; and (iii) high-speed rail."
- "Spurring massive growth in clean manufacturing in the United States and removing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing and industry as much as is technologically feasible."
- "Working collaboratively with farmers and ranchers in the United States to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector as much as is technologically feasible."
If these unrealistic behemoth aspirational goals were in fact pursued, the government would end up doing more and more of what the private sector and industry should be doing. The plan has correctly been derided as a hopeless government overreach, short on details and financial realism. The proposals are clumsy attempts to find a solution.
Also telling by comparison to the demise of the Soviet Union is the striking confluence of circumstances that have likewise resulted in capitulation to Afghani Islamists under Biden's administration. The de facto U.S. surrender to the Taliban is widely regarded as signalling the collapse of American geo-political influence globally. Similar to how Soviet allies in the Warsaw Pact were disheartened following the withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan, U.S. allies are also dismayed. There's been a fundamental shift of power in the region, with U.S. adversaries China, Russia and Iran filling the void. Furthermore, similar to how the Confederation of Independent States saw a fragmentation of the Soviet Republics, we witness in our own day the Red state and Blue state fragmentation of the USA, leading to an increasingly polarized society. We can conclude by observing how the next generation of the Democrat leadership won't be able to save the party. The old guard will eventually be replaced by the next generation of party leaders, with a clear lack of centrists in their cohort. The rapidly ascendant extremist 'Squad' faction in the party will take the mantle of leadership and thereby alienate the vast majority of the electorate.
