There’s a new term being brandished against those in the church called as watchmen. It used to be “heresy hunters” but now we’re being called “neo-Pharisees.” The former label was made popular by TBN’s Paul Crouch against those who exposed the false doctrines of TBN regulars who taught the Positive Confession/Word-Faith teachings that they utilized to get the viewers to pay them for God’s favors. Move over Robert Schuller, the Church of Laodicea has a new star on the rise in the world of positive motivational Christianity. It’s Joel Osteen, pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, whose motto is “Discover the Champion in You.” He is the son of Pentecostal preacher the late John Osteen. But where his dad lacked in charm and charisma the 39-year-old son makes up for it in the style of a Tony Robbins with the looks of a Richard Gere. Osteen made the list of the Top 20 Influencers of the Pentecostal/charismatic community in the Jan/Feb 2003 Issue of Ministries Today magazine. He was listed with other notables such as Kenneth Hagin Sr., Tommy Tenney, C. Peter Wagner, and Joyce Meyer. “There is no arguing that the following 20 leaders have inspired us, challenged us and in many ways caused us to rethink what it means to “do church” in today’s culture,” the article boasted. “Greed” — one of the seven deadly sins. The dictionary calls it: “An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth.” [1]
The last days’ Church of Laodicea is marked as one full of greed and avarice. The church that Jesus is going to spew out of His mouth is rich in this world’s goods. Jesus tells this church: ” . . you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’– and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked — ” (Rev. 3:17).
It’s only been very recently that the accumulation of wealth has been interpreted as God’s blessing on His people. One of the first preachers to popularize this notion in the 1960s was the Reverend Ike. [2] When he first burst on the scene he was immediately recognized as a religious phony.
